MADISON, Wis. -The Wisconsin women's tennis team made a strong showing in its season opener at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., over the weekend. The Badgers sent seven and came away with a flight championship.

Sophomore Caroline Bauer (Winnetka, Ill.) reached the championship match of the Love singles flight. In her first match, Bauer defeated Laurel Krebsbach of Gustavus, 6-2, 6-0. Bauer's next opponent, Iowa's Cassandra Escobar was forced to default due to an injury.

Bauer later lost to Movern McCulloch of Iowa in the semis, 6-4, 6-4, but advanced to the championship match because McCulloch was one of two Iowa players that had qualified for the finals and the Hawkeyes elected not to face one another. Bauer stepped in and defeated Ally Majercik of Iowa, 6-0, 6-2.

Sophomore Nicky Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) won her first two matches in the Mauer singles flight before falling to Iowa's Shelby Talcott, 6-2, 6-2. Stracar faced another Hawkeye next in Sonja Molnar.  The sophomore fell to Molnar, who later went on to win the flight, 6-1, 6-2.

In her first match on Friday, Stracar battled Megan Gaard of Gustavus and pulled off the win, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6). In her next match, Stracar defeated Magdalana Wiecha in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Also representing UW in the Mauer singles flight was junior Hannah Berner, (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who reached the consolation championship match. After dropping her first match to LSU's Rebecca Bodine, 6-4, 6-4, Berner went on to defeat Maddy Soule of UW-Milwaukee in her next match, 6-2, 6-4. Next, Berner met up with Iowa State's Tessa Lang, who she topped 6-0, 6-1. In the consolation championship match, Berner fell to Kaitlin Burns of LSU, 6-1, 6-2.

Senior Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) also competed in the Mauer singles flight. Iowa's Shelby Talcott defeated Trgovich in the opening round Friday, 6-2, 6-2. Trgovich was then defeated by Burns of LSU, 6-2, 7-5. Next, Trgovich met up with Gustavus' Megan Gaard, who she cruised past, 6-0, 6-0. In her final match, the senior defeated Simona Cacciuttolo of Iowa State, 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Aleksandra Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) was first defeated by Iowa's Katie Zordani, 6-2, 6-1, but Markovic later went on to beat Alex Erickson of Gustavus, 6-3, 6-0. Markovic then fell in a battle to Iowa State's Marie-Christine Chartier's, 6-4, 7-6 (7.) In her final match of the tournament, Markovic topped Iowa State's Jenna Langhorst, 6-4, 6-2.

True freshman Sarah Loebel (Hamburg, Germany) represented Wisconsin well in her first tournament as a Badger. Loebel won her first two matches before enduring her first loss to eventual champion of the McNabb flight, Ellen Silver, of Iowa, 6-4, 6-0.

In the first round, Loebel defeated Christina Harazin of Iowa, 6-2, 6-1. After dropping the first set in Saturday's match, Loebel battled back to defeat Minnesota's Aria Lambert in a hard-fought battle, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-6). Following the loss to Silver, Loebel played in the third-place match, where Iowa's Katie Zordani defeated her, 6-4, 6-3.

Senior Lauren Gruber (Milwaukee, Wis.) also played in the Love flight. She defeated her first opponent, Elizabeth Przystawski, 6-1, 6-1. Next, Gruber faced UW-Milwaukee's Christina Colarossi, whom she beat, 6-0, 6-2. Gruber suffered her first loss of the tournament in a competitive match with Ally Majercik of Iowa, 6-7 (0), 6-4, 15-13. Gruber was then scheduled to play McCulloch, however, the match was not played.

On the doubles side, the duo of Berner and Markovic were named consolation champions, defeating their own teammates along the way. Berner and Markovic defeated teammates Loebel and Gruber, 9-8, to reach the consolation championship match in the Koivu flight.

The pair of Trgovich and Stracar reached the championship match in the Koivu flight after winning their first three matches. In the final, however, the pair was ousted, 8-4, by Molnar and Talcott of Iowa.

The Badgers will have next weekend off, before traveling to Evanston, Ill., Sept. 30- October 2 to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.
