Wisconsin falls short, 4-3, to Drake

Feb. 23, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin fell short, 4-3, to Drake in Sunday’s match in Des Moines, Iowa. This marks the second loss for the Badgers (4-2) this season.

“Obviously, we are not pleased with the loss,” said head coach Tina Samara. “I think some players will realize they need to work harder and that they have more work do.”

A day after sweeping Creighton, 7-0, the Badgers faced a stiffer test Sunday. UW successfully debuted new doubles combination on Saturday, but were unable to capture the doubles point on Sunday.

In No. 1 doubles, the new pair, Lauren Burich and Nova Patel, was able to defeat Mariel Ante and Lea Kozulic, 8-5.

The duo Becca Bailey and Lauren Chypyha fell short, 8-6, to Maddie Johnson and Klavija Rebol. The new team of Sydney Rider and Anastasia Tripolskaya lost to Nell Boyd and Jordan Eggleston, 8-5.

“It’s like we have been eating 10 pounds of food every night and Drake hadn’t been eating,” said Samara. “Drake was hungrier for the win.”

In No. 1 singles, Chypyha dominated against Klaydija Rebol, 6-0, 6-0. Chypyha still holds her perfect record in dual matches of 6-0.

“I think she has a good chance to do really well as we move into Big Ten play,” said Samara.

Burich and Tripolskaya were also able to capture wins at today’s match. Burich defeated Mariel Ante, 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-3, and Tripolskaya defeated Maddie Johnson, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Rider fell short, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in a third set to Nell Boyd that resulted in Drake winning the match. Patel lost to Jordan Eggleston, 6-3, 6-4. Bailey fell short, 7-6 (1), 6-2 to Lea Kozulic after having two set points in the first set.

Up next, Wisconsin will host No. 45 DePaul at noon (CT) on March 1. The Badgers will also begin Big Ten play at Noon (CT) on March 2, when they host the Minnesota Gophers. Both matches will be played in the Nielsen Tennis Stadium and admission is free.
