Wisconsin makes a clean, 7-0, sweep over Creighton

Feb. 22, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- After grinding through their first four matches, the Badgers breezed past Creighton on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep in Des Moines, Iowa. Wisconsin improved to 4-1 on the season with the win.

Although Anastasia Tripolskaya and Nova Patel had a perfect 4-0 record in doubles play, the Badgers mixed up the doubles team to try and take a more commanding lead during doubles action.

The tactic work as Wisconsin claimed victory in all three doubles matches.

“We tried switching the doubles teams around this match,” said head coach Tina Samara. “We haven’t been happy with some of the slow starts we’ve had and have lacked some intensity right away. We’re trying to figure out why that is and we’ll be trying out some different combinations.”

The new pair of Lauren Burich and Patel stepped out as No. 1 doubles and defeated Jennie Hartjes and Katherine Nelsen, 8-5. The new team in No. 3 doubles, Tripolskaya and Sydney Rider, defeated Amanda Noonan and Liz Vermillion, 8-6.

The No. 2 doubles team remained the same, as Becca Bailey and Lauren Chypyha won, 8-6, over Analese Snyder and Sam Andersen.

“I think overall we have done better in singles and doubles, but we need to keep working on it on an individual level,” said Samara.

Chypyha improved to 5-0 in dual matches this season after she defeated Jennie Hartjes, 6-1, 6-0.

Bailey, who was a walk-on addition to the Badgers’ roster in January, won her first dual match of the season today after she defeated Karlin Naslund, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

“Bailey has been working really hard,” said Samara.  “She has had some tough battles but we’re all really glad she won her match today. She is getting better every time she plays.”

Patel had a clean victory over Sam Andersen defeating her 6-0, 6-0.

“Nova took care of business,” said Samara. “It’s what we want everyone to do.”

Burich claimed victory over Analese Snyder, 6-4, 6-1. Tripolskaya dispatched Katherine Nelsen, 6-3, 6-0. Rider rounded out the sweep by defeating Amanda Noonan, 6-4, 7-6 (0).

Wisconsin’s focus is now on tomorrow’s match against host-school Drake. The Badgers will return to action at 11 a.m. (CT) in Des Moines, Iowa.
