MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season Sunday, defeating No. 37 NC State, 6-1, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Sunday's win marks Wisconsin's first win over the Wolfpack under head coach Brian Fleishman. Last season, Wisconsin was blanked, 7-0, at NC State.

The Badgers are now 5-1, while the Wolfpack fall to 3-4.

"I think it's one of the biggest, if not the biggest, wins over a ranked opponent since I've been here," Wisconsin head coach Brian Fleishman said.

UW entered singles play with a 1-0 edge, a feat that has preceded a win in Wisconsin's five victories this season.

After a loss at No. 1 doubles, the No. 3 doubles team picked up a win, putting the doubles point on the line at the No. 2 spot.

Freshman Nova Patel and sophomore Nicky Stracar picked the most opportune time to record their first doubles win of the season at No. 2. They clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory over the Wolfpack's Tatiana Illova and Nicole Martinez.

After falling behind, 5-2, seniors Aleksandra Markovic and Angela Chupa came back to take the next six games and defeat Sophie Nelson and Christy Sipes, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Alaina Trgovich and Hannah Berner suffered its first loss of the season at the top spot with an 8-5 loss to Joelle Kissell and Ashley Miller.

Trgovich recorded the Badgers' first singles win of the afternoon at the No. 3 spot. Trgovich topped Elisha Hande, 6-3, 7-5.

Hannah Berner played a competitive match at No. 1 singles, but ultimately came out on the losing end as she lost to Kissell, 7-6 (10), 6-4.

Nicky Stracar tallied a win for Wisconsin at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tatiana Illova.

At No. 4 singles, freshman Sarah Loebel spotted a victory over Ashley Miller. After falling behind, 5-2, in the first set, the freshman mounted a comeback to take the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (3). Loebel closed out the match in straight sets with a 7-5 second set victory.

Patel defeated Chloe Smith in a super-tiebreak for the match at No. 5 singles. Patel edged Smith, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8).

At No. 6 singles, Markovic recorded a thrilling victory in a third set tiebreak to take the match, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4), from Nicole Martinez.

Wisconsin heads west next weekend for its first roadtrip of the season. The Badgers play at BYU on Saturday, Feb. 18 and at Utah on Sunday, Feb. 19.
