MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team endured its first loss of the season at the hands of DePaul Friday night at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Blue Demons ousted the Badgers, 5-2.

The loss puts the Badgers at 4-1, while the Blue Demons improve to 6-1.

Wisconsin entered singles competition with 1-0 disadvantage after losing the doubles point for the first time this season.

The undefeated duo of senior Alaina Trgovich and junior Hannah Berner was the only doubles team to defeat the Blue Demons. The pair beat Rebeca Mitrea and Patricia Fargas, 8-5.

Sophomore Nicky Stracar and freshman Nova Patel paired up at No. 2 doubles and fell, 8-2, to Jasmin Kling and Gia McKnight.

At No. 3 doubles, seniors Aleksandra Markovic and Angela Chupa suffered their first defeat of the season with an 8-3 loss to Kelsey Lawson and Cali Gustafson.

Wisconsin dropped its first two singles matches, putting DePaul up 3-0 and just one win away from clinching the match. The Badgers, however, made the Blue Demons wait it out until the bitter end.

With only the No. 2 and No. 6 singles players still on the court, the Demons led 3-2 and needed just one match to secure their sixth-straight win, while the Badgers needed both to keep their undefeated season intact.

Both matches were forced into three sets where the Demons ultimately came up victorious, beating the Badgers, 5-2.

"We definitely put ourselves in a position to win it," said Wisconsin head coach Brian Fleishman. "But I think this was a learning experience, and we'll use that Sunday against NC State."

At No. 1 singles, Hannah Berner endured her first loss of the season as she fell, 6-3, 6-3 to Jasmin Kling.

Playing at No. 2 singles Trgovich came from behind to pull off a 7-5 first set victory, before falling 6-0, 6-2, in the final two sets. The senior suffered her first loss of the season to Patricia Fargas.

After dropping the first set, 6-4, Nicky Stracar battled back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-3, over Gia McKnight. The win at No. 3 singles marks Stracar's first singles victory of the dual season.

Nova Patel recorded her third win as a Badger in just as many appearances. She defeated Rebeca Mitrea, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot.

Angela Chupa also came up short, competing at No. 5 singles. Chupa was defeated by Kelsey Lawson, 6-3, 6-2.

Markovic also came from behind to take the first set, before ultimately falling in three sets at No. 6 singles. In a thrilling match, Markovic overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first set to record a 6-4 first set victory, before losing the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5, to Carolin Neumann.

The Badgers return to Nielsen Tennis Stadium Sunday, Feb. 12, as they host No. 37 NC State. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
