MADISON, Wis. -- The Badgers continued their hot start to the season by winning Sunday’s match against Milwaukee, 6-1. Although Wisconsin’s record is now 3-0, head coach Tina Samara doesn’t feel like Wisconsin is in control.
“You can’t be mad at 3-0, but I’m also not happy at 3-0,” said Samara. “I’m worried at how we are getting the wins. Everyone needs to commit to certain things and to the disciplined. These are matches we need to win more decisively and more in control.”
It certainly looked like the Badgers were in control when Wisconsin won the doubles point against Milwaukee. Not only did Wisconsin win the doubles point, the Badgers won all of the doubles matches. Becca Bailey and Lauren Chypyha won 8-5 against Hayley Marshall and Alysa Straub. The pair of Sydney Rider and Lauren Burich defeated Christina Colarossi and Diana Tokar, 8-6.
The team of Nova Patel and Anastasia Tripolskaya moved to 3-0 on the season after claiming victory over Dana Shannon and Aerielle Pendleton, 8-4.
The duo Patel and Tripolskaya isn’t the only 3-0 mark on the young season for Wisconsin as three Badgers, Rider, Chypyha, and Tripolskaya own 3-0 records in singles play. Rider remains strong after she defeated Dana Shannon 6-4, 6-2. In No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, Chypyha and Tripolskaya dominated 6-1, 6-2, over Diana Tokar and Aerielle Pendleton.
“Our expectations are not to be 3-0 because we are winning against Milwaukee and Northern Illinois; it is to be competitive against the Big Ten at the highest level,” said Samara. “That is what they need to start focusing on.”
Burich and Patel also claimed victory in today’s match. Burich went 6-4, 6-3 against Chelsea Bailey. Patel defeated Alysa Straub 6-2, 6-1. Bailey fell short, 6-2, 6-3, to Kristin Kurer.
Up next, Wisconsin will continue its homestand when the Badgers take on No. 65 Louisville at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 and Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16.
