Badgers opening weekend starts off strong

Patel and Tripolskaya celebrate their win

Feb. 2, 2014

MADISON, Wis. --The opening weekend of the 2014 season was successful for the Wisconsin women's tennis team, even if the Badgers' performance wasn't a work of art. On Sunday, UW gritted out a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois in its home opener. Combined with Saturday's win over Marquette, the Badgers are off to a 2-0 start.

"At the end of the day, we pretty much redefined winning ugly," said head coach Tina Samara. "At the end of they day, you have to be able to win ugly."

Wisconsin was able to secure the doubles point in dramatic fashion. With UW and NIU splitting on courts No. 1 and 3, all eyes were on Becca Bailey and Lauren Chypyha at No. 2 doubles. The duo delivered with a 7-5 comeback win.

The duo Nova Patel and Anastasia Tripolskaya won their doubles match, 6-4, against Maris Rozo and Cristina Alavarez. The pair of Lauren Burich and Sydney Rider fell short to Arantza De La Torre and Nelle Youel, 6-4.

In No. 1 singles, Chypyha defeated Nelle Youel, 6-2, 6-2. Tripolskaya dominated against Arantza De La Torre, 6-1, 6-0. Burich went 6-2, 6-3, defeating Haley Dekkinga.

Sunday also marked Rider's first career home when she defeated Mary Malkin, 6-1, 6-1.

"Last two matches Sydney has played really well in singles," said Samara. "Sydney is a kid that when she gets confident, you will see some great things out of her. If she continues to work the way she is now, we are going to see her improve throughout the season."

Bailey lost the first set to Stephanie McDonald, 6-3, but then made a comeback winning it 6-2. However, in the third set tiebreaker, Bailey fell short to McDonald 10-6.

Unfortunately, Patel was unable to finish her match against Christina Alvarez and forfeited after going 6-7, 0-1.

"I think that this team needs to learn that if they can beat someone 6-0, 6-0 then they should beat them 6-0, 6-0," said Samara. "What we did today was let the opponent dictate the level. They need to learn how to come out and be who they are regardless of the other side."

Up next, the Badgers host Milwaukee on Feb. 9 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium at Noon (C.T.)
