MADISON, Wis. - Tina Samara may be new to the Wisconsin-Marquette rivalry, but it didn't take her long to notch bragging rights in the I-94 series. In her first season as the Badgers' head coach, Samara led UW (1-0) to a season-opening 5-2 win over Marquette on Saturday in Milwaukee.

"It was definitely great for the team to beat Marquette since we lost to them last year," Samara said, referring to UW's loss a year ago, which snapped an eleven-year win streak over the in-state rivals. "We owed them one back."

Wisconsin started off strong by securing the doubles point when Sydney Rider and Lauren Burich defeated Ali Dawson and Aina Hernandez in the No. 1 match. Nova Patel and Anastasia Tripolskaya also took down Ana Pimenta and Vanessa Foltinger. Both matches ended with final scores of 8-4.

The pair of Lauren Chypyha and Becca Bailey fell short to Erin Gebes and Rocio Diaz, 8-1.

Playing No. 1 Singles, Lauren Chypyha clinched the win in a third set tiebreaker against Ana Pimenta, 4-6, 6-2 (10-4).

In Burich's No.2 singles match against Erin Gebes, she rallied back from a 4-6 first set loss to claim the second set, 6-4. However, Burich would fall short in her third set tiebreaker 6-10.

The Badgers then went on to claim victory in three out of the four remaining matches. Tripolskaya dominated against Ali Dawson, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 position. Rider won, 6-2, 6-4, against Laia Hernandez. Patel defeated Aina Hernandez, 7-5, 6-3.

In her first match back from a three-year break, and first-ever collegiate match, Bailey fell short to Rocio Diaz, 4-6, 1-6.

This match marks the first Wisconsin win for Samara and assistant coach Matt Manassee. "Any win is a good one," said. Samara. "It was nice to win especially with all the changes that have happened since the fall. Everyone played tough and it showed a lot of heart."

Up next, the Badgers will host Northern Illinois in the season home opener tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
