A trio of athletes with ties to the University of Wisconsin swimming program competed Saturday in the preliminaries of the womens 50-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
Recent UW graduate Jackie Vavrek, who entered the Trials seeded 10th in the event, led the group of Badgers by finishing 22nd with a time of 25.74 seconds. The top 16 finishers moved on to make up the field for the semifinals, which will be held Saturday evening at the Qwest Center.
Also in the prelims, sophomore-to-be Maggie Meyer finished with the 40th-fastest time in 26.14, while incoming freshman and New Berlin, Wis., native Beckie Thompson clocked the No. 84 time at 26.69.
Lara Jackson posted the top time of the prelims, setting an American record with her time of 24.50.
Saturdays session concluded competition for an impressive contingent of 29 current, former and future Wisconsin swimmers at the Olympic Trials. The event continues with an evening session Saturday before wrapping up Sunday. Complete results are available at www.usaswimming.org.
