As part of its year-end look back, UW Athletics profiles 10 candidates this week leading up to the announcement of the 2011-12 Athlete of the Year awards this Friday. Today, we profile Athlete of the Year candidate Beckie Thompson of the women's swimming and diving team.
MADISON, Wis. -- The 2011-12 season was one for the record books for women's swimmer Beckie Thompson, who set three school records and became the first Big Ten swimmer to win four-consecutive conference titles in the 50-yard freestyle.
Her time of 22.04 to win the 50 free at the Big Ten championships in February, broke her own school and conference record in the event. She would later go on to break the record again at the NCAA championships where she registered a time of 21.94 in the opening leg of the 200 free relay. The time stood as the eighth-fastest time in the nation for the season.
Thompson also broke two other school records in her final season as a Badger while at the Big Ten championships. Swimming in the 100 free, she clocked in at 48.28 to set both the school and pool records. As part of the 200 free relay team, she helped post a time of 1:28.46, setting both the school and Big Ten records.
In all, Thompson won a total of five Big Ten titles at the 2012 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships (50 free, 100 free, the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay). She was named to the All-Big Ten first team and Big Ten Swimmer of the Week twice, first on Jan. 31 and again on Nov. 15.
At the NCAA championships, she claimed All-America honors in the 50 free and 200 medley relay, along with honorable mention All-America status in the 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay.
