MADISON, Wis. -- Junior Maria Van Abel and sophomore Taylor-Paige Stewart have been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for their work in the classroom last season. Both earned NFCA Division I All-America Scholar Athlete honors for posting a grade point average of 3.50 or higher during the 2012-13 school year.
Van Abel, a 2013 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, achieved a 3.731 GPA last season. The Kaukauna, Wis., native started in the outfield in 55 of the Badgers’ 57 games, recording a .346 batting average. She was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team, earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Stewart completed her first year at Wisconsin with a 3.889 GPA. The Calabasas, Calif., native posted a 4-0 record in 12 appearances in the circle for the Badgers, finishing the season with a 2.23 ERA.
Wisconsin was also recognized by the NFCA as a 2013 NFCA All-Academic Team for posting a team GPA of 3.08 during the 2012-13 academic year.
