MADISON, Wis. -- Strength at the plate and solid play in the field was the recipe for success this season for Wisconsin second baseman Whitney Massey. For that, Massey was selected to the NFCA All-Great Lake Region first team, announced Thursday.
Massey was one of two Badgers to start all 53 games this season, recording a team-best .358 batting average and setting a UW single-season record with 22 doubles. The Salinas, Calif. native finished the season averaging 0.42 doubles per game, the best in Division I.
In the field, Massey finished the year with a .976 fielding percentage, recording 120 putouts, 84 assists and five errors.
After three seasons of play, Massey is tied for fourth at UW with 32 career doubles and ranks sixth with 65 career walks. Her .296 career batting average is tied for ninth-best all-time at UW, while her 71 career RBI is one short of the UW top-10 list.
The All-Great Lakes Region first team honor marks the first ever for Wisconsin, as Molly Spence earned second team All-Great Lakes Region honors in 2010. In 2000 Andrea Kirchberg earned first-team All-Mideast Region honors, while Samantha Polito was named to the All-Mideast Region first team in 2007.
The first team honor qualifies Massey for All-American selection, to be announced May 30 on NFCA.org.
