• NFCA All-Region teams
EUGENE, Ore. -- The records continue to fall for the Wisconsin softball team, as a school-record three Badgers were selected to NFCA Great Lakes All-Region teams. Whitney Massey headlined the list with her second first-team all-region selection, while Cassandra Darrah and Mary Massei were named to the second team.
Following her first-team selection at second base last year, Massey was honored for her skills behind the plate this season. Playing in 44 games at catcher, Massey was behind the plate for all three of the Badgers’ no-hitters. The senior is batting .352, set a single-season school record with 12 home runs and also holds top marks with 49 RBI.
Darrah, the Big Ten tournament MVP, earned her first all-region honor after leading Wisconsin with a 26-5 record, and is just two wins away from tying the Badgers’ single season record. The junior right-hander holds a 1.83 ERA in 210.1 innings of work.
Massei, a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection, was named all-region for her play in the outfield. Massei leads the Badgers with a .428 batting average and has recorded UW single-season records for hits (77), runs (50) and total bases (125).
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
Wisconsin (42-11) begins NCAA regional play today when it takes the field against North Carolina (39-19) at 5 p.m. CT.
