MADISON, Wis. -- For the second straight year, the NCAA tournament-bound Wisconsin softball team will head west to compete in the Eugene Regional hosted by Oregon this Friday through Sunday, May 16-18.
UW will open regional action against Albany on Friday in a 4 p.m. (CT) contest at Howe Field. Oregon, the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, will play Utah Valley at 7 p.m. (CT) on Friday. The four teams will compete in a double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to the Super Regional round.
The Badgers (34-18) have never faced Great Danes of Albany (30-10), who won their fifth America East Conference champion on Sunday, but Wisconsin holds a 7-0 all-time record against teams from the America East.
UW won its only meeting with Utah Valley (18-40) in 2008, defeating the Wolverines, 4-3. The Wolverines won the WAC tournament title with a win over New Mexico State on Sunday.
The Badgers faced Oregon (49-7-1) last year in Eugene, falling to the Ducks, 3-0, in the final game of the regional. Wisconsin is 0-4 all-time against Oregon.
Wisconsin is 3-8 in its 11 previous NCAA tournament contests, with two wins coming last year in Eugene.
The 16 regional winners will advance to Super Regional competition for a best-of-three series that will be conducted May 22-25 at eight campus sites. From there, the eight winning teams will advance to the 2014 NCAA Women's College World Series, May 29 to June 4 in Oklahoma City.
