MADISON, Wis. – After a strong showing on the diamond and in the classroom, Wisconsin softball outfielder Maria Van Abel was named to the Capital One Academic All-District softball team in the sixth district, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
A junior from Kaukauna, Van Abel holds a 3.52 grade point average while studying management and human resources.
Van Abel ranks third in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 21 swipes as the Badgers lead the conference with 102 stolen bases.
A 2013 Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar and Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree, Van Abel is third on the squad with a .314 batting average and her 30 runs rank second on the team. Van Abel also sports an on-base percentage of .356.
The 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution.
Van Abel and the rest of the Badgers travel to Michigan to face the Wolverines in their final regular season series of the year. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m., while Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. tilt will air on BTN. UW and Michigan meet on Sunday in a noon contest to wrap up the regular season.
