MADISON, Wis. – After a historic week at the plate for the Wisconsin softball team, senior Michelle Mueller made more history on Tuesday, becoming the first Badger to be named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week and USA Softball National Player of the Week.

A La Crosse, Wis., native, Mueller hit four home runs, two doubles, collected 18 RBI and hit .600 as the Badgers went a perfect 5-0 at home last week. The Badgers’ third baseman posted an on-base percentage of .588 and a slugging percentage of 1.533.

“We are so proud of Michelle,” UW head coach Yvette Healy said. “It is a big honor for the university and the softball program. She is a great Wisconsin kid that has grown into an amazing player within our program. To do this at the national level for a player like her means a lot to our program. It shows that we can compete on a national level with some great players from across the country but especially with our homegrown Wisconsin kids.”

“I'm so honored to receive these awards,” Mueller said. “It's something that would not have been possible if it weren't for my teammates. Their ability to get on base and to create chaos offensively gave me a great opportunity to be successful. I'm so thankful to be surrounded by great teammates and a fantastic coaching staff.

“This is something I could have only dreamt of and have been working so hard for the last four years.

Mueller hit a grand slam, the first of her career, and also recorded seven RBI as the Badgers tied a school record with 17 runs in a 17-1 win over North Dakota last Wednesday.

She continued her hot streak into UW’s second game of a doubleheader vs. Illinois, hitting three consecutive home runs and collecting eight RBI -- a UW single-game record. Mueller's three consecutive home runs are tied for the second-most in NCAA history, and her three homers tied the single-game school record.

On the year, Mueller is second on the Badgers with a .385 batting average, and her eight home runs lead the team. Mueller also has a team-best 41 RBI, which ranks third in the Big Ten.

Mueller and the Badgers face Green Bay in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Goodman Diamond. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., and the games will air on BTN.
