MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin softball team took the field to begin preparations for the 2013 season on Monday. The Badgers’ day consisted of weight lifting, fielding, classroom work and hitting.
The Badgers are fresh off one of the best seasons in program history, earning a 34-19 record in 2012, including 13 Big Ten Conference wins.
Wisconsin’s 34 wins tied the school record set in 2000 as the team’s 19 losses were the fewest in UW history. Its .641 winning percentage was a program best.
UWs’ 13 Big Ten wins were a program best and the .565 winning percentage ranked third-best in program history.
UW returns 15 letterwinners and 10 starters from last year’s squad; including three players selected to All-Big Ten teams.
2013 won’t be easy; Wisconsin’s 53-game schedule consists of five games against opponents ranked in the top 25 in the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. Wisconsin opens the season at the UNC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., and will play Notre Dame, a 40-game winner in 2012, twice.
The Badgers’ trip to the Easton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif., March 1-3 features matchups against Stanford and California, ranked No. 21 and No. 21 respectively in the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
In the Badgers’ last big road trip prior to opening Big Ten Conference play, they will face North Carolina twice at the Louisville Tournament. The Tar Heels finished 2012 ranked No. 24. Wisconsin will also play tournament host Louisville. The Cardinals finished 2012 ranked No. 17, winning 55 games and making a strong run through the NCAA regionals before losing to Michigan in the regional final.
