MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's soccer team was picked third in the Big Ten preseason coaches' poll, the conference announced Tuesday.
This marks the second season in a row that the Badgers have been selected third in the preseason poll. Prior to that, the last time the team was chosen among the top three was in 2003.
The Badgers return 10 of 11 starters from a squad that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, its second-straight postseason appearance. In addition, 17 letterwinners return as head coach Paula Wilkins enters her fifth season.
Seniors Michele Dalton and Laurie Nosbusch and junior Alev Kelter were also chosen as Wisconsin's Players to Watch for the upcoming season.
A second-team All-Big Ten selection at goalkeeper last season, Dalton posted 11 shutouts in 2010, the fourth-best number in school history and the most since 1989.
A forward, Nosbusch has led the Badgers in scoring in each of her three seasons on campus, something no other player in school history has accomplished. She was a first-team All-Big Ten selection last year after finishing second in the conference with 10 goals.
Kelter, a midfielder, earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2010 as she placed second on the team with 39 shots and 20 shots on goal. She also finished third on UW with three goals and eight points.
Wisconsin opens the season Friday at defending national champion and top-ranked Notre Dame. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. (CT).
