Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team was picked fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Big Ten announced Tuesday. In addition, seniors Monica Lam-Feist and Lindsey Johnson, as well as sophomore Cara Walls were named players to watch.
Penn State enters the 2012 campaign as the conference favorite, followed by Illinois, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The Badgers return 15 letterwinners from a team that went 10-7-3 last season and finished fourth in the final Big Ten standings. Johnson returns after earning All-Big Ten second-team honors, as well as All-Great Lakes second-team accolades in 2011. Walls started 17 games as a freshman and led the Badgers in points (19) and goals (9) en route to earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team last season.
In addition to returning Lam-Feist, Wisconsin also welcomes back senior midfielder Joana Bielefeld in 2012. Bielefeld started every game last season and is poised for a successful 2012 campaign after tallying four points on two assists and a goal last season, while Lam-Feist has only missed one start during the last three seasons.
The Badgers officially open the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 17, as they host Notre Dame at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
