Badgers picked second in Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll

Aug. 13, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team was picked second in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the conference announced Wednesday. In addition, seniors Genevieve Richard and Cara Walls, along with sophomore Rose Lavelle were named as players to watch.

Penn State enters the 2014 season as the conference favorite, followed by the Badgers at No. 2, then Maryland at No. 3 in its first year in the conference, defending Big Ten champion Nebraska at No. 4 and Michigan at No. 5.

UW returns 10 starters from a team that went 10-7-2 last season and finished in a tie for fifth (5-5-1) in the final Big Ten standings. Included in that group is 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Lavelle, along with Richard and Walls.

With 19 letter winners returning, Wisconsin also welcomes back Kinley McNicoll who led the team with 25 points last season and earned second team All-Big Ten accolades. Kylie Schwarz also returns after being named to the Big Ten's All-Freshman squad last year and garnering the start in 17 matches to anchor a backline that earned five shutouts.

UW brings back 88.6 percent of its goal scoring from a season ago, as well as 86.4 percent of its point production.

The Badgers travel to face Marquette on Thursday in their lone exhibition match of the preseason. The 2014 season officially kicks off Friday, Aug. 22, when UW hosts Oregon at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
