WINDSOR, England - Former Badger Kristin Hedstrom, along with teammate Julie Nichols, finished seventh in Thursday's women's lightweight double sculls semifinals at the London Olympics, falling one spot short of earning a lane in Saturday's final.
The U.S. finished in a time of 7:12.61, less than a half-second slower than sixth-place Austria. Hedstrom and Nichols finished fourth in their individual heat, falling two seconds behind Germany in the opening group of the semifinals.
Great Britain and China both earned victories in their respective heats, and will be the favorites heading into the medal race this weekend. Greece and Denmark also earned spots in the medal race, while Team U.S.A. will compete with the remainder of the field to determine seventh through 12th place.
Hedstrom represents the first Olympian of the storied UW lightweight program, and was a vital member of two national championship teams at Wisconsin in 2006 and '08.
