DORNEY LAKE, England - After a less than stellar outing in Sunday's lightweight double sculls race, U.S. teammates Kristin Hedstrom and Julie Nichols took to the waters Tuesday morning looking to secure a spot in Thursday's semifinals and continue the journey toward earning the U.S. a medal.
The duo not only secured its lane in Thursday's semifinals by winning heat 2 of the repechage, it also posted the fastest time of any boat competing in either heat, beating out second-place Canada by less than two seconds. The victorious U.S. boat won in a time of 7:13.82, nearly six seconds slower than its time during the duo's third-place finish in Sunday's opening heats.
Team USA will now move onto Thursday's semifinals, where they will be competing in heat 1 and racing from the fifth lane. The opening heat includes New Zealand, Germany, Great Britain, Greece and Cuba, while heat 2 consists of Japan, the Netherlands, Denmark, China, Australia and Canada.
