DORNEY LAKE, England – The XXX Olympiad is well underway and the rowing competition is in its second day, with former Badgers hitting the waters yesterday, as well as today.
Former University of Wisconsin lightweight rower Kristin Hedstrom, along with U.S. teammate Julie Nichols, finished third in the slow heat of the women’s lightweight double sculls on Sunday morning.
Despite beating out three other boats that were competing in the same heat, Hedstrom and Nichols were one spot short of earning an automatic berth to compete in the semifinals and will be relegated to the repechage.
Greece, Great Britain and the People's Republic of China all prevailed in their respective heats, earning automatic bids to compete in Wednesday’s semifinals. Although Greece and Britain won in some of the fastest times rowed all year, only one other non-automatic qualifying boat was faster than the duo of Hedstrom and Nichols.
The repechage is set to take place on Tuesday, July 31st, with the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday.
