MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin women’s rowers Kate Mansfield and Abby Knight were named to the 2012 Pocock All-America teams, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Monday.
Mansfield was a member of Wisconsin’s openweight varsity eight and was selected to the openweight first team. Knight was named to the lightweight All-America team after competing for the lightweight women’s team this season.
Mansfield, a senior from Decorah, Iowa, spent the entire season in the first varsity eight. She helped the Badgers to a third-place finish at the Big Ten championships and an 11th-place finish at the NCAA championships.
“On behalf of the team, I would like to congratulate Kate,” head coach Bebe Bryans said. “She is very deserving of this honor. Earning it puts her in a very elite group of Badger rowers and I could not be more proud of and happy for her.”
Knight is a junior from Clifton Park, N.Y., and stroked the lightweight varsity eight this season. Her boat finished first at the EAWRC Eastern Sprints conference championships and fourth at the IRA national championships.
“I’m excited for Abby. She’s done a fantastic job this season,” lightweight head coach Erik Miller said. “She’s one of the hardest workers on the team, and as the stroke in the varsity eight, they relied on her all season. She’s very deserving of the honor.”
Mansfield, Vanessa Kleiss and Rachel Buchholtz were named to the CRCA 2012 Division I All-Region Team. Mansfield and Kleiss were first-team selections, while Buchholz was a second-team honoree in the Central Region.
Selection to the openweight All-America team is based on having rowed at least 75 percent of the season in the varsity boat, the strength of the boat at the national level, coaches’ comments and 2000 meter ergometer scores. The lightweight All-American crew is based on a team’s finish in the women’s lightweight varsity eight grand final at the IRA championship regatta.
Mansfield’s selection marks the fourth-straight season a Badger has been selected to the openweight All-American team, following Vanessa Kleiss’s second-team honors in 2011, Vicky Opitz in 2010 and Theresa Shields in 2009. Opitz and Shields were first-team selections.
Knight is the 13th Badger to be named to the lightweight All-America team. Wisconsin has had an All-American every year since the award’s inception in 2007.
