BOSTON -- The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team claimed a third-place finish Sunday in its third and final competition of the fall racing season, the 49th annual Head of the Charles regatta at the Charles River in Boston.
With only one boat registered to race, the Badgers focused all their efforts on the lightweight eight event. Wisconsin's squad was the third of nine boats to cross the finish line, completing the 4,800-meter stretch in 17:21.2. Minerva and Radcliffe finished ahead of Wisconsin, recording times of 17:05.2 and 17:15.0, respectively.
Despite competing in just one of the day's events, the team had other reasons to celebrate. Also rowing in the regatta were UW lightweight rowing coach Lisa Schlenker and former lightweight rower Abby Knight.
Schlenker and partner Kelly Salchow MacArthur defeated 15 other competitors in the Women's Master Doubles event, taking first place with a time of 20:43.4. The second-place boat checked in at 21:09.0.
Knight represented Wisconsin rowing alumni in the Women's Lightweight Singles race, placing seventh out of the 17 boats in the event. Knight recorded a time of 22:15.7, just under a minute behind first-place finisher Mary Jones of Vesper.
With the fall portion of its schedule completed, the lightweight rowers will not return to the water until next March, when they will race against Tennessee.
