ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team continued its 2013 fall season on Sunday, taking on opponents from across the country at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill.
Races were held on a 6,000-meter stretch of the Rock River. Wisconsin’s lightweight boats tested their abilities alongside the openweights in the collegiate eight, four and pair races, as well as the collegiate novice eight and novice four.
Wisconsin’s top lightweight crew in the collegiate pair claimed a first-place victory, as Alessandra Ruenger and Jennifer Kish finished the race in 18:17.9. The lightweight B squad, which clocked an 18:48.8, crossed the finish line fifth behind an array of Wisconsin openweight boats. Wisconsin’s lightweight D, E, C and F crews placed seventh, 12th, 15th and 17th, respectively.
I am so pleased with the performance of the lightweight pairs,” said coach Lisa Schlenker. “I wanted a strong placing -- in the top 10 for my first four pairs. We have done a lot of Saturday morning intrasquad racing with the open and lightweights and the lightweights were hungry for the win. Their aggressive race enthusiasm and stellar work ethic is truly paying off. With only one senior racing today the younger team is setting their own bar and wanting more.
The lightweight crews also looked right at home in the collegiate novice eight race. The top five finishers in the event were a mix of openweight and lightweight squads from Wisconsin. The first lightweight crew took second place behind the Wisconsin openweight A boat, finishing in 17:05.4. Close on the heels of the Wisconsin C boat was the second lightweight team from Wisconsin, claiming fifth place with a time of 18:16.1.
“Today was a great way to start the season,” said Todd Vogt, assistant coach for Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing. “For over half of those who competed, this was their first rowing race ever. They still have quite a bit to do with improving their basic rowing fundamentals and their fitness, but I’m looking forward to watching them race in the spring.”
The Wisconsin women also had a strong showing in the collegiate eight event, placing third behind UW’s top openweight boat and an entry from Minnesota. The top lightweight crew completed the course in 15:39.0, only three seconds behind second-place finisher Minnesota. The second UW lightweight eight entered took ninth.
In another race dominated by Wisconsin and Minnesota boats, the two lightweight crews from Wisconsin in the collegiate four event placed third and seventh.
