MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s lightweight varsity four made a strong start in its quest to claim a third-consecutive national title at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships on Saturday in Gold River, Calif.

With only one heat in the varsity four, the Badgers cruised to an easy victory, posting a nearly five-second margin of victory over Harvard-Radcliffe with a time of 7:26.998. The grand final will be held tomorrow, Sunday, June 2, at 11 a.m. (CT).

The Badgers’ varsity eight also started well, placing second in its heat to advance to Sunday’s grand final. Wisconsin gave the heavily favored Harvard-Radcliffe team a challenge, finishing just over two seconds behind the Crimson’s boat in 6:42.280. The varsity eight grand final is scheduled to start at 1:35 p.m. (CT).

A national championship hunt is nothing new for the Badgers, who have won five titles since 2004 and haven’t finished below fifth at the championship regatta since its inaugural race in 1997. Last year, the Badgers’ varsity eight claimed a fourth-place finish, behind Stanford, Bucknell and Harvard-Radcliffe.
