WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team did all it could on Saturday in its first day of racing at the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.
The third-ranked lightweight eight rowed an extra 2000 meters after placing third in the morning heats, but still ended the day where it wants to be - in the national championship race. Stanford (6:45.764) and Bucknell (6:48.332) got the better of the Badgers, who took third in 6:59.283 in the morning heat and missed one of the two direct qualifying spots into Sunday's big race.
In the afternoon repechage, Wisconsin cruised to second place to grab the final spot in Sunday's grand final. Princeton edged the Badgers for the other spot, winning in 7:15.672. The Badgers clocked a 7:16.583 to put over eight seconds on third-place MIT (7:24.742).
Sunday's lightweight eight grand final will include the Badgers, Bucknell, Stanford, Radcliffe, Boston University and Princeton. The national title race is scheduled for 10:55 a.m. CT and can be seen online.
The varsity four, which own the last three IRA titles, won its morning heat to advance directly to Sunday's grand final. The Badgers (7:48.403) won by nearly 10 seconds over second-place Radcliffe (7:58.213).
