MADISON, Wis. -- Racing Stanford for the third time in three weeks, and second time in two days, the Wisconsin women's rowing team fell to the Cardinal in its final race of the regular season Sunday in Boston.
After falling to Stanford on April 7, and beating them Saturday, the Badgers' first and second varsity eights fell to the Cardinal in the final races between the top two crews in the country on the Charles River.

In the first varsity eight, No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 1 Stanford got off to a quick start, thanks to a slight tailwind. The crews had a fairly even start, but the Cardinal began to pull away at the 500 meter mark. The Badgers were unable to recover despite a late push in the final 500 meters and finished in 6:40.3, 4.9 seconds behind Stanford.
"They had just a little bit more speed than we did today," Wisconsin head coach Erik Miller said. "It was good to have another close race with Stanford. It pointed out some good things for us to work on before we see them again at the IRA National Championships."
The second varsity eight got off to a good start and had the lead over Stanford in the middle 1000 meters. However, Stanford was able to catch up and gained a few seats on the Badgers. UW could not overcome the slight deficit and came in just 1.4 seconds behind Stanford, in 6:59.2.
Sunday's races wrapped up a strong weekend of racing for the Badgers. On Saturday, Wisconsin's first varsity eight defeated four top-ten teams, winning its heat over No. 4 Harvard-Radcliffe and No. 10 UMass before defeating No. 1 Stanford, Harvard-Radcliffe and No. 7 Buffalo in the grand final. The second varsity eight came in second to Harvard-Radcliffe Saturday, finishing ahead of Stanford and MIT.
"Overall it was a really good weekend for the team," Miller said. "We learned a lot and had some good races. We found some strengths and found some things that we need to work on, so it was a pretty good way to wrap up a busy month of racing."
The Badgers have three weeks off before returning to the water on May 13, in Cherry Hill, N.J., for the Eastern Sprints.
