MADISON, Wis. -- After not being on the water in two weeks, the Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team took to the podium in two events at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Sunday.

The lightweight varsity eight grand final, Wisconsin battled to a first-place title edging Bucknell by 0.62 seconds, finishing in 6:42.85. It’s the first win for the Badgers this season, after dropping a dual to Princeton to open competition on March 31.

“Our land based training for the beginning of the spring season has fueled the excitement, and once their blades touched liquid they were hungry,” said head coach Lisa Schlenker. “We are fortunate to have tremendous depth this year. Both the varsity and second varsity eight boats are peppered with all classes filling the seats.”

Following suite, the novice eight boat took the openweight novice eight grand final with a time of 6:58.10, besting Boston College by nearly three seconds.

“Our freshmen took charge of the freshmen/novice races with a fantastic win in the open weight event,” Schlenker said.

The novice eight won all three of its events, including a 16 second victory in the semifinals. In all over the two-day event, the three Wisconsin crews raced a total of 14 times.

Additionally, the second varsity eight claimed the third final on the last day of competition, crossing the line in 7:01.16. The same boat also took sixth place in the lightweight varsity eight grand final.

“The second varsity eight took advantage of every race to increase both their comfort of being back on the water and speed of their performance,” Schlenker said.

The Badgers look forward to getting back on the waters of Lake Mendota this upcoming week, as they prepare for the Boston Round Robin on April 20-21.
