Oak Ridge, Tenn. -- Racing in open water for the first time this spring, the Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team found success Sunday against the University of Dayton in day two of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The second varsity lightweight eight boat led the way for Wisconsin, finishing the 2,000-meter race in 7:14.200 before the openweight second varsity eight crew from Dayton checked in at 7:46.293.

The varsity eight race was a bit closer, as the openweight boat from Dayton crossed the finish line first with a time of 7:02.700, just seconds before the Badgers' lightweight rowers could complete the race with a time of 7:06.344.

The lightweight rowing team also had a varsity eight and a second varsity eight boat compete against openweight squads from Michigan State University and the University of Tennessee yesterday, with both UW boats finishing their respective races third.

With its first taste of open water, the team will begin preparing for the next competition of the 2014 spring rowing schedule, the Pac-12 Challenge on March 29 in Redwood City, Calif.
