Madison, Wis. -- Travelling south in search of open water, the Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team opened its spring rowing season Saturday with races against Michigan State University and University of Tennessee in the 2014 Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
After a long winter of indoor training, the two participating Badger lightweight boats took to the water for a practice session at the site of the two-day weekend invitational, Melton Hill Lake, Saturday morning before competing on a 2,000-meter stretch of the lake later in the afternoon.
The UW lightweight varsity eight boat raced first, competing against openweight varsity eight squads from Michigan State and Tennessee. Wisconsin crossed the finish line third with a time of 7:02.480, following MSU's winning time of 6:44.800 and Tennessee's second-place finish of 6:50.726.
Wisconsin's lightweight second varsity eight boat also faced two openweight crews, checking in third with a time of 7:23.490 after MSU and Tennessee reached the end-line in 7:01.400 and 7:04.850, respectively.
The Oak Ridge weather cooperated nicely for the Badgers' first competition of 2014, sporting a sunny, 63-degree day with 4-8 mph winds heading northwest.
Wisconsin is slated to row in varsity eight and second varsity eight races against the University of Dayton at 1 p.m. Sunday in the final day of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.
