CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
• The Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team heads back to Cherry Hill, N.J., June 3-4, for the 2011 IRA National Championships on the Cooper River.
• The third-ranked Badgers look to improve on their runner-up finishes in the varsity lightweight eight and varsity lightweight four races from last year.
• Despite finishing second behind then-No. 1 Stanford last year, Wisconsin has won five of the past seven national titles and looks to win its third in four years.
• UW will face off against Bucknell, Buffalo, Georgetown, MIT, Radcliffe, Stanford and Princeton in the varsity lightweight eight event. All eight teams are ranked in the top 10 of the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll, released May 11.
• Defending champion Loyola (MD) and Tulsa will join MIT, Radcliffe, Stanford, Princeton and the Badgers in the varsity lightweight four race.
• The Badgers return four from last season’s runner-up varsity eight and two from last season’s second place varsity four. All of these athletes, including two sophomores from the varsity eight, have competed in at least one varsity race during the spring season.
HEAD COACH ERIK MILLER ON THE TEAM'S IRAs PREPARATIONS
"Both boats are looking good ahead of the start of racing. Having the three weeks since Sprints to sharpen up our skills has really been helpful, and I think the crew has found a bit more speed.
"Princeton and Stanford are both very quick crews this season, and will be hard to beat in the eight, but if we have a good race and row to our full potential, I think we have a chance at coming away with a good result.
"The weather has been quite hot, but it is normal and expected for this regatta at the start of June in Camden. The team is eager to start racing"
OF NOTE
• The Badgers received an automatic bid to the IRA’s because of their second-place finish at the Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) conference championships on May 15.
• UW’s top boat fell to top-ranked Princeton by four seconds in the varsity eight race, while Wisconsin’s second varsity eight and varsity four won their respective races.
• Although the Badgers lost, they closed the gap against the Tigers from the start of the spring season, when UW lost to Princeton by just under 11 seconds at the Stanford Invitational.
• Despite finishing second in the top race of the day, the Badgers won their fifth-straight Konrad Ulbrich Trophy, which is given to the lightweight team with the best overall performance at the Eastern Sprints.
• This year, the first without separate novice races, was most likely the last running of the Eastern Sprints, as the Ivy League looks to branch out and host its own conference championships.
• Ten novice athletes competed in Wisconsin’s varsity boats at the Eastern Sprints.
• The top part of the USRowing Collegiate Poll has remained unchanged since it was first released for the spring season on March 30. Wisconsin has been ranked third all season behind No. 2 Stanford and undefeated Princeton.

2011 Spring Season Rewind
After an exhibition race against the Louisville novice openweights, Wisconsin opened the spring portion of its season at the Stanford Invitational at the end of March. UW’s second varsity eight shined with wins over the host Cardinal and Princeton, while the varsity eight won against the St. Mary’s openweight crew.
The Badgers then traveled east for the Knecht Cup (also on the Cooper River) on April 9-10, where they competed against mostly openweight squads. Despite that, the Badgers defended their title in the Women’s Frosh/Novice Eight event and won the Women’s Second Varsity Eight grand final. Wisconsin also swept the top two places in the Women’s Lightweight Eight race, defending its title there as well.
Two weeks later, Wisconsin raced against No. 7 MIT in its final tuneup before the Eastern Sprints. In their first meet on Lake Mendota since 2007, the Badgers’ top boat won against the Engineers, who received an at-large bid to the IRA National Championships, by just under 35 seconds.
