MADISON, Wis. -- A pair of Wisconsin women’s openweight rowers have been accepted into the 2014 USRowing Women’s Pre-Elite National Team Camp set for June 8-22, in Princeton, New Jersey.
The first is Claire Scott (Darlington, Wis.), who was a two-time Darlington High School all-conference basketball player. Scott rowed as the three seat last weekend against Minnesota as the Badgers’ novice eight won The Hammer, which goes to the winner of the novice eight race in the annual dual between the two schools. She has been a part of UW’s novice eight all spring.
Joining Scott as an invitee to the camp is Sophia Vitas (Franklin, Wis.), who was a letterwinner in four sports at Franklin High School, including basketball, soccer, cross country and track and field. Rowing in the second novice eight last week, she helped the boat cruise to a nearly 20-second victory over the Gophers as the three seat.
The two were accepted to the camp after submitting a coaches’ recommendation, and other information, like their 2000-meter erg scores. A total of 16 rowers from around the country were selected for an invitation.
With the camp, USRowing hopes to identify and develop future national team rowers.
