MADISON, Wis. – The 15th-ranked Wisconsin women’s openweight varsity eight won its third Burnin’ Blade in four years to claim Big Ten Boat of the Week honors.
Racing on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sunday, the Badgers clocked a 6:11.80 time over 2000 meters to reclaim the travelling trophy from Minnesota. The Golden Gophers crossed the line in a distant second in 6:23.43.
The race for the Burnin’ Blade began in 2011, with the Badgers winning the first two races, before Minnesota won the trophy last season.
Making up this week’s varsity eight for UW were coxswain Marie Hebert, as well as Gillian Cooper, Monica Whitehouse, Hannah Schwartz, Kristine Kammers, Steph Malchine, Anne Rauschert, Libby O'Rourke and Brianna Dahm.
The honor marks the second of the season for Wisconsin. UW’s varsity eight was also named Big Ten Boat of the Week on March 18 after victories over Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas and West Virginia at the Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Wisconsin is off this week, but returns to the water on Sunday, May 18, for the 2014 Big Ten Rowing Championships in Indianapolis.
