MADISON, Wis. -– Wisconsin’s varsity eight earned the first Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week honor of the rowing season with its performance last weekend at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. Racing took place on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., at the start of spring break for the Badgers.

Racing in the afternoon on Saturday, with just one spring practice on the water under their belts, the UW varsity eight led a perfect showing for the Badgers over the weekend with a victory over Kansas and Alabama. The Badgers put more than 18 seconds on second-place Kansas in the race.

The Badgers returned to the water on Sunday, grabbing a 6.5-second margin of victory over second-place Tennessee. They also beat Kansas and West Virginia in the race.

Wisconsin raced four boats during the event with its varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four all winning two races.

UW’s varsity eight on Saturday included coxswain Marie Hebert, Nicole Hettmann, Anne Rauschert, Steph Malchine, Brianna Dahm, Pamela Schommer, Kristine Kammers, Margo Grover and Monica Whitehouse.

The Badgers made a switch at stroke for Sunday, trading Saturday’s second varsity eight stroke Gillian Cooper for Nicole Hettman.

The honor marked the first for a UW boat since the varsity four was Big Ten Boat of the Week on May 7, 2013.
