MADISON, Wis. –- The Wisconsin women’s openweight and lightweight rowing programs got their first tastes of competition for the 2013-14 season with Saturday’s Milwaukee River Challenge. Racing took place on the Menomonee and Milwaukee Rivers in Milwaukee.
“Milwaukee is finally finished,” said Head Coach Bebe Bryans. “It was a long day, but it was a really good day. We travelled mainly with our youngsters -- our new varsity members and so I was interested to see how they would step up to actually providing their own leadership and they really did a great job. I was so impressed with the way they came out and raced hard and took ownership for what they were doing.”
In the open eight, Wisconsin’s top openweight entry placed second in the three-mile race with a time of 17:53.21. Purdue posted the top time of the day with a 17:44.72. UW’s second openweight boat, dubbed Wisconsin C, finished third in 18:02.55. The Badgers’ lone lightweight eight in the race clocked an 18:43.24 to grab sixth place in a race that featured 15 entries.
We had freshman in the eights, including one girl that had only been rowing for a couple of weeks,” explained Bryans. “So just a great turnout. Our performance was just a really encouraging thing because it just shows that our future is very bright. We came here to figure those things out.”
In the open four, Wisconsin’s B boat took the title with a 19:20.36, while the UW A boat was third in 19:47.49. Wisconsin’s D entry placed fifth in 20:08.16. The winning UW crew included coxswain Katie Sutehall, Vivian Simmons, Alexa Callahan, Kellyn Cameron and Emilie Johnston.
UW’s lightweight boats played eighth (20:32.63), ninth (20:44.63 and 12th (21:35.58) out of 17 entries.
Wisconsin women’s rowing programs compete next on Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Head of the Rock in on the Rock River in Rockford, Ill.
