MADISON, Wis. -- Competing at the Monticello Invite in Lake Monticello, Va., Sunday, the Wisconsin women's rowing team found mixed results, sweeping Duke in the morning session before falling in two-of-three races to defending national champion Virginia in the afternoon.

"We were happy with today's rowing and racing," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "Anytime you can compete well against the likes of defending champion Virginia and Duke you have to be pleased."

The Badger varsity four was a perfect 2-0 on the day against the Blue Devils and Cavaliers. In the morning against Duke, the fours posted a 7:32.0 time to win the race by just under four seconds. Against Virginia later in the day, they posted a 7:41.4 time and finished just over four seconds ahead of the Cavaliers' first four boat and over 12 seconds ahead of their second boat.

Both of Wisconsin's varsity eight boats were successful against Duke. The first varsity eight crew posted a 6:32.0 time to better the Blue Devils' mark just under than four seconds.

The Badgers' second varsity eight blew past Duke, posting a 6:42.5 time that cleared the Blue Devils' time by 14 seconds.

However, defending champs proved to be too fast for the Badgers' first and second varsity eights in the afternoon.

The Cavaliers cleared the Wisconsin varsity eight boat's 6:51.5 time by over ten seconds, while the second varsity eight crew, who posted a 6:58.9 time, was narrowly edged by Virginia's 6:57.4 mark.

"This is the end of a really challenging racing campaign and we're looking forward to coming home to Madison to regroup and train," Bryans said.

The Badger women return to action Sunday May 5 at home on Lake Mendota hosting Minnesota and Michigan State.
