Wisconsin finishes strong at Clemson Invite

CLEMSON, S.C. – Bad weather once again marred the Clemson Invite, leaving four second session races cancelled a day after poor conditions forced postponement of several others. That was disappointing news for the Wisconsin women’s rowing team, which – after a powerhouse performance on Sunday – probably hoped that the day could go on forever.

A pair of top-two finishes from the varsity eight led the way for the Badgers on a day in which they finished in the top four in each of the six races that they competed in, with five of those finishes coming in the top three.

“Other than (the weather), it was a really good day of racing for us. The varsity eight – they really found themselves today,” said head coach Bebe Bryans. “That was pretty exciting, and it was good to see them get to the point where we can really start working on our speed now.”

Feeling disappointed with Saturday’s fifth-place finish, the varsity eight made sure they left Clemson on a better foot, finishing second in the first race of the day. No. 13 UCLA took the top spot at 6:47.9, leaving the Badgers and No. 20 Indiana to battle it out for second place. The two boats went right down to the wire, before Wisconsin nudged ahead for good, its 6:51.4 time just 0.4 seconds faster than Indiana’s. It was quite a reversal for UW, which finished four places and nine seconds behind IU on Saturday.

The varsity eight wasn’t done there, however, one-upping their early performance with a first-place finish in their second race of the day. This one wasn’t quite as close, as the Badgers’ time of 7:15.5 provided them a 3.4 second cushion over second-place, No. 18 Syracuse.

The varsity four won their second race of the weekend, turning in a 7:52.4 time that was nearly three seconds better than No. 14 Harvard and seven seconds better than third-place Indiana. They lost a chance to make it three-straight top finishes when their second race of the day was cancelled due to weather.

The second varsity eight posted a fourth-place finish in the early event, timing at 7:07.4 to finish behind top-finisher Indiana (6:57.4), Harvard and UCLA. They would improve on that result in their second race, crossing the line in third at 7:31.7, less than five seconds behind Louisville, which won at 7:26.9.

“The second varsity eight was solid. The varsity four put together a great race last night and raced really well again today. It was great to see them get the win,” Bryans said. “All in all, it was a pretty solid day. The competition was awesome, and it was a fantastic regatta.”

The third varsity eight closed the door on the day for the Badgers, snagging third place at 7:08.5, just 0.7 seconds behind second-place, No. 18 Clemson and three seconds behind top-finisher Harvard.

Sunday’s results cap a strong weekend by the team against what has arguably been the stiffest competition that it has faced this season, and it bodes well as the Badgers enter the stretch run. Wisconsin has two bye weeks in the next three weekends, with its only competition between now and the Big Ten Championships coming on May 4 at Minnesota.
