ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a full day of racing at the Big Ten Double Dual on Belleville Lake, the Wisconsin women’s rowing team scored a Saturday morning victory over Michigan State, 42-26, before dropping an afternoon contest against No. 10 Michigan, 42-30.

“We had some mixed results, but we were really happy with the way the day went,” said head coach Bebe Bryans. “The freshmen raced beautifully in the afternoon, so that was a great learning moment for them. They were definitely the stars of the day.”

The varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four boats all won, giving the Badgers a clean sweep of the NCAA boats against the Spartans – who received votes in the latest NCAA team rankings – to get things started on the right foot.

The varsity eight’s time of 6:37.38 was just fast enough to edge out MSU, which crossed the line one second later. The varsity four matched the result, finishing 18.58 seconds ahead of Michigan State with a time of 7:23.70.

The second varsity eight posted a 6:41.2 time that was 5.55 seconds faster than the Spartans. The Badgers also won the second varsity four with a time of 7:36.5.

Although Wisconsin couldn’t capture a second victory against highly-ranked Michigan, the varsity four certainly did its part as its 7:37.0 time was 5.64 seconds better than the Wolverines’. The varsity eight improved on its morning time by more than four seconds, but still couldn’t catch Michigan, which clocked in at 6:27.3.

“The first varsity four in the afternoon had a fairly slow first 500, and they were down almost a full boat length, but stroke by stroke reeled Michigan back in and ended up winning by a length,” said Bryans. “It was a great performance.”

The second varsity eight came up short as well, finishing 5.31 seconds behind the Wolverines at 7:00.84. The Badgers were able to score wins in the novice eight (7:19.1) and second novice eight (7:42.0).

With the Big Ten Double Dual in the books, the Badgers will turn their attention to next Saturday’s Clemson Invite.
