MADISON, Wis. -- Hockey Canada has announced that former UW defenseman Meaghan Mikkelson has been named to the 21-player roster to represent Canada's National Women's Team at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
It makes the second time that Mikkelson will skate for Team Canada in the Olympics as she won gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.
Mikkelson who hails from St. Albert, Alberta, scored 29 goals and had 86 assists in 142 games at UW and was a part of the 2006 and 2007 national championship teams. In her final season with the Badgers, Mikkelson was named the 2007 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and picked up her first All-American honor.
The 2014 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team, which will feature 18 forwards and defensemen and three goaltenders, will be announced on Jan. 1, 2014, at the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. Five with Wisconsin ties, including alums Brianna Decker, Meghan Duggan, Hilary Knight and Jessie Vetter, along with incoming freshman Annie Pankowski are on the current 23-player roster.
