MADISON, Wis. -- UWBadgers.com caught up with freshman Laurel Miller (Ramsey, Minn.) in this week’s segment of “Badger Breakaway,” where the UW women’s hockey players will share some of their favorites on and off the ice.
Miller and the second-ranked Badgers are idle until Jan. 1-2, 2011 when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn., for the Easton Holiday Showcase against Northeastern and Mercyhurst at the National Hockey Center.
UWBadgers.com: What’s your pregame routine?
Miller: I sit in the stands and listen to music, and I read a card that my mom sent me when I first moved away to college. I was the first one from my family to move out of the state, so it was hard for me but hard for my parents, too. My mom sent me a card and reading it helps build me up. It’s really cute.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite piece of hockey equipment?
Miller: I’d have to say my skates. I like them a lot. They help me skate fast.
UWBadgers.com: What’s one thing that you bring with on every road trip?
Miller: My stuffed animal, Melinda. It’s a cow. Ever since I was little, my parents have called me “Missy Missy Moo.” We don’t know why. When I got here with the team, everyone asked if I had a nickname. I told them my nickname was Mooey, you know, like Moo? They started calling me that, and my mom got me the cow. Everyone loves it. It’s a favorite.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite professional sports team?
Miller: I would have to say the Minnesota Twins. I love them.
UWBadgers.com: What is your best hockey memory?
Miller: My junior year of high school, we didn’t think we were going to win the game to move on to the section championship game. We had great chemistry that year, and we all came together to win. It was really cool. We didn’t end up going on to the state tournament, but it was huge to win that game the way we did, all coming together.
UWBadgers.com: What’s your favorite practice drill?
Miller: Four Nations
UWBadgers.com: What’s the thing that you love most about Madison?
Miller: I really love the campus, and I also love our team atmosphere and the coaching staff.
UWBadgers.com: Who is the funniest player on the team?
Miller: I’d have to say Carla Pentimone. She does some things and you just have to smile and laugh.
UWBadgers.com: What is your greatest strength on the ice?
Miller: My vision
