MADISON, Wis. — In preparation for this weekend’s series for the No. 1-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team, UWbadgers.com caught up with sophomore forward Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) to get her take on the Badgers’ matchup against conference foe Ohio State.
Q: Is there any added pressure on the team since you are ranked No. 1?
Decker: Personally, no I don’t think it adds any pressure to the team. It’s just a ranking, it doesn’t matter what team we have to face next. It’d be nice to hold that No. 1 spot though, as long as we come out hard against every team, it doesn’t matter where you’re ranked.
Q: Do you feel like there is a bigger bull’s-eye on your backs now that you are ranked at No. 1?
Decker: Even though we’re No. 1, I think that no matter what team we play they’re going to give us their best game. Especially now that we’re No. 1, I think they’re going to try to boot us out of that spot and not have us sit in that spot for too long. So we’ll just have to take it to them.
Q: What would be the Badgers’ mentality if you were going up against a No. 1 team?
Decker: If we were to play a No. 1 team, yeah we’d be a little more jacked up about it. We would probably just want to try and kick them out of that spot and give them our best game.
Q: How has the team been preparing for this weekend’s series against Ohio State and is there anything in particular you are looking out for?
Decker: So far we’ve been preparing the same way as every weekend that we’ve gone into so far this season. Practices have been the same, but I think that as the week goes on we’ll watch some video and figure that out. They have a couple of key players that we’re playing and want to capitalize on and figure out what their strengths are so we can take them away.
Q: Is the team looking for revenge against Ohio State since the last time you two played the Badgers’ were eliminated from the WHCA playoffs?
Decker: I think we’re going to want to get them back, especially because they beat us in two games, right away. And yeah, there’s going to be a lot of revenge from our team.
Q: How did having last weekend off affect the team and how do you think it will impact this weekend?
Decker: With the weekend off, I think that it was nice just to have a little bit of a rest. It was nice that we kind of got into our rhythm, but then all of a sudden we had a weekend off. People got to rest up and hopefully will be fresh for the weekend ahead of us.
