MADISON, Wis. -- In preparation for this weekend's opening series for the University of Wisconsin women's hockey team, UWBadgers.com spoke with senior forward Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) on the Badgers' chances against Rensselaer Polytechnic.
Q: Is the team ready to start the season?
Nash: Yes, definitely. I think we've, by far, prepared for it. I think we're ready. We could play tomorrow. Our team has so much going on, we're so pumped up. We're all thinking: finally, it's here.
Q: How is the team preparing for this weekend's series against RPI?
Nash: We've been preparing all summer both individually and as a team, just on and off the ice. I think the chemistry of the team has really helped us to get ready for the weekend. I think we all know that we have a lot of talent, but we've been really focusing on our team chemistry, positive attitudes on and off the ice. We're always excited to see each other, whether it's passing each other on our mopeds or walking into the locker room, seeing each other at people's houses. We just have that chemistry going on right now that makes our skills on the ice so much better.
Q: How important is the first series for the team?
Nash: I think it has a big impact, but I think that every game has a big impact on our season. We want to try as hard as we can. Who knows what will happen on Friday or Saturday, but on Sunday we don't want to think, `we should've done this, it would've been better in that situation.' I think this weekend does have a big impact on the season for us though.
Q: Is getting ready for the opening series of a season different from preparing for another series later in the season?
Nash: I think we typically have the same mentality. We want to win that game; we want to do everything we can, but obviously there's so much adrenaline coming in. We just had the Red and White scrimmage, and just warming up for it, we got so excited. The home opener is big. It's the start of the season, and we want to start it off right.
Q: Does is it help that you get to open the season at home?
Nash: Yes, totally. I can't speak for other teams because we have the Kohl Center here, and the atmosphere of it just gets you pumped up no matter how many people are in the stands. The fans obviously help us, too. I think being at home makes a huge difference.
The Badgers host RPI at the Kohl Center this weekend. Both games begin at 7 p.m. CT. The games will be streamed live at UWBadgers.com.
