MADISON, Wis. – Construction continues on La Bahn Arena, Wisconsin’s new facility for women’s hockey games, men’s hockey practice and swimming locker rooms.
The general outline of where the new hockey locker rooms will sit can now be seen from the office of men’s hockey head coach Mike Eaves as various foundation walls and foundation columns go in. The hydraulic shaft is being drilled for the elevator at the locker rooms nearby, while the footings and foundation walls for the arena continue alongside the Nicholas Johnson Pavilion.
An important step is nearing as the new electrical switch gear vault is close to being energized, which will lead to removal of existing electrical connections through the middle of the arena area. That will allow the mass excavation of the arena area.
Removal of an existing storm sewer will also take place before the mass excavation as a new storm sewer has already been completed.
Construction on the connecting tunnel, between the Kohl Center and the new arena, moves along. The tunnel runs under where the currently-closed Bucky’s Locker Room is located. Concrete slab, foundation walls and concrete roof deck installation all sit on the docket for the coming weeks.
While that is going on, window openings are being cut into the SERF, which will eventually add windows into Wisconsin’s swimming facility for some much-needed light.
Finally, a temporary bridge over the East Campus Mall underpass now allows access to the Kohl Center loading dock.
