COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior forward Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) was named the U.S. Olympic Committee's Athlete of the Month for April, USA Hockey announced Wednesday. Knight received the honor for her play in the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women's Championship, April 16-25 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Knight led the U.S. Women’s National Team to a gold medal and was the tournament’s leading scorer with 14 points (five goals, nine assists). The Sun Valley, Idaho, native scored the world championship-winning goal at 7:48 of overtime in the gold-medal game to secure a 3-2 victory for the U.S. over the reigning Olympic champion Canadians.
After making her Olympic debut at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Knight was playing in her fourth world championship. The Badger junior outshot her teammates two-fold, posting 45 shots on goal in five games, while also leading the tournament with a plus-11 rating. She was named to the tournament’s all-star team as well.
Knight’s success with Team USA came on the heels of the Badgers’ fourth national championship season. UW finished with a 37-2-2 overall record, marking the most wins in a single season in NCAA women's hockey history. Knight garnered first-team All-American honors after leading the nation in scoring with 47 goals during the 2010-11 campaign.
