MADISON, Wis. – Freshman forward Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich.) was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for Feb. 23 after earning her first career hat trick as the Badgers topped Minnesota State, 9-1, last Saturday.
On the weekend, Packer finished the series with 12 shots and had a +2 rating. She now has seven multi-point games on the year, including three of the last four. Packer’s hat trick came one week after she recorded a career series-high four assists.
The Birmingham, Mich., native climbed to 11th in the nation among rookies with 0.77 points per game this week. She ranks fourth in scoring among WCHA rookies.
The award marks Packer’s second career player of the week honor. She also took home rookie of the week honors on Jan. 5 after registering three points on one goal and two assists against Mercyhurst and Northeastern at the Easton Holiday Showcase.
In other WCHA weekly awards this week, Minnesota Duluth sophomore forward Pernilla Winberg was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the week, and sophomore defenseman Megan Bozek of Minnesota took home the league’s defensive player of the week award.
No. 1 Wisconsin (30-2-2, 24-2-2-2 WCHA) hosts St. Cloud State (1-31-1, 1-26-1 WCHA) in the first round of the WCHA playoffs this weekend. The Badgers earned the No. 1 seed in the WCHA playoffs, while St. Cloud State is the No. 8 seed.
The best-of-three series will take place at the Eagle’s Nest in Verona, Wis. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday night, and Sunday’s game, if necessary, will begin at 4 p.m. The winner of the series will advance to the 2011 WCHA Final Face-off at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, March 4-5.
