MADISON, Wis. -- UWBadgers.com caught up with freshman forward Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich.) in this week’s segment of “Badger Breakaway,” where the UW women’s hockey players share some of their favorites on and off the ice.
Packer and the No. 1-ranked Badgers (20-2-0, 14-2-0 WCHA) return to action at the Kohl Center when they host St. Cloud State (0-20-1, 0-15-1-1 WCHA) this weekend. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m., and the teams conclude the series at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
UWBadgers.com: What has the season been like for you so far?
Packer: It’s been fun. It was different coming in with an injury. That was an experience I’d never had before, but the team was really positive and I got a lot of support from everyone. The group was really welcoming to all of the new players. As difficult as it was coming in with an injury, it was nice to be able to come in and have the support of the team and be able to work through everything to get back on the ice.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite practice drill?
Packer: Four Nations.
UWBadgers.com: What’s your pregame routine?
Packer: I don’t really have any superstitions. I listen to music in the stands after we warm up. I just kind of sit there by myself on the side. I listen to all different types of music.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite professional sports team?
Packer: The Detroit Red Wings. My favorite player is Henrik Zetterberg.
UWBadgers.com: What has surprised you the most about college hockey?
Packer: Definitely the speed of the game. You have to make quicker decisions, be smarter with the puck and conserve yourself. You don’t have to go 100 miles an hour all the time. If you play smart and make the right choices, it’s pretty easy to keep up.
UWBadgers.com: What is your best hockey memory so far?
Packer: Winning the 2009 Women’s U-18 World Championships with the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team in Fussen, Germany.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite pregame meal?
Packer: Chicken, but I don’t really eat that much before games.
UWBadgers.com: What’s the thing that you love most about Madison?
Packer: Besides hockey? I love the trail mix at Copps in Fitchburg.
UWBadgers.com: What is your greatest strength on the ice?
Packer: My ability to see the ice and make plays.
UWBadgers.com: What do you think makes the WCHA so special?
Packer: I think that there are a lot of strong teams in the WCHA, so there is a lot of solid competition throughout the whole year. Every time you play a conference team, you know it’s going to be a good game and you have to prepare for each team. There are a lot of individually talented players throughout the league that make their teams stronger.
UWBadgers.com: What is your favorite piece of hockey equipment?
Packer: My helmet because I get hit a lot.
