Madison, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association named freshman goaltender Becca Ruegsegger Defensive Player of the Week for her performance last weekend. The Lakewood, Colo., native made a total of 33 saves while never allowing a North Dakota goal in four periods of work last weekend in a WCHA series played at the Urban Plains Center in Fargo, N.D.
With her team trailing 3-0 against the host Sioux last Friday (Jan. 8), Ruegsegger came in to the game in relief for the third period and stopped all seven shots on goal, allowing the Badgers to get a score and avoid the shutout.
Then in the series finale last Saturday, Jan. 9, Ruegsegger got the start between the pipes and responded with a 26-save shutout – her second of the season – as the visiting Badgers earned a split with North Dakota with a 2-0 victory. She also helped the Badgers blank the Sioux on all five of their power-play chances.
On the season, Ruegsegger owns a 6-4-3 record overall with a 1.85 goals-against average and a .926 saves percentage in 14 games played.
Ruegsegger last earned the honor on Nov. 4, when she posted her first series sweep over league-leading and No.2-ranked Minnesota.
