Badgers in the CWHL

Former Badgers Meghan Duggan and Hilary Knight helped lead the Boston Blades to their first Clarkson Cup in team history, defeating the Montreal Stars, 5-2, on Saturday, March 23, in Markham, Ontraio.

Both Montreal and Boston clinched spots in the title game after starting the 2013 Clarkson Cup playoffs with a 2-0 record. In Friday’s championship preview, Montreal edged Boston 1-0, as the Stars went through round-robin action without conceding a single goal.

However, Boston rebounded the following day and used five power-play goals to down the defending Clarkson Cup champions.

Prior to the 2013 Clarkson Cup championship game, Knight was recognized as the league’s Most Valuable Player. In just her rookie season, Knight led the Blades with 17 goals and 15 assists. Her 32 regular-season points was third most in the league. She lived up to her MVP honors, leading all skaters at the 2013 CWHL Playoffs with five points in four games.

Duggan, an assistant captain for the Blades, chipped in two assists in the four playoff games. She missed part of the season due to injury, but still finished the regular season with 13 points.

Two other former Badgers skated at the 2013 Clarkson Cup playoffs, Carolyne Prévost for Montreal and Mallory Deluce for Toronto.

Prévost opened the postseason with a goal in the Stars’ 5-0 win against Brampton on March 20. She also started for Montreal in their round-robin game against Boston, March 22.

Deluce tallied one assist for the Furies’ opening game against Boston. Toronto took a 2-1 lead over the eventual Clarkson Cup champs in the second period, but Boston scored two unanswered goals for the win.
